The
club has an ethos to provide badminton for all –whether juniors
or veterans or whether you have played for County Team or even never held
a badminton racket before—all are welcome. Last season it had 54
registered players
The club has the opportunity to use the Sulby Community Hall which has
recently been refurbished to a high standard by the Lezayre Commissioners.
It meets on Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights throughout the badminton
season and continues on Mondays through the summer for the people that
can`t live without badminton !
But the Club`s origins started in the Andreas Village in the 1960’s
with stalwarts like Isobel Kinley , Glen Lord, Sandra Corlett, Billy Teare,
Lol Hewitt, John Callow. The Club ran three teams then and played at the
Andreas Parish Hall ( every body remembers the iron beams!).
In 1969 they narrowly missed out on the Green Final Trophy for the first
time going down narrowly 4-3 in a tight final.
In 1970/71 the A Team was playing a good standard of having won League
3 (out of then 12 leagues). and always played in Leagues 3 and 4 through
the seventies.
Andreas BC was also infamous for two other things in badminton –
fantastic match night suppers (a tradition which is still in place today
in Sulby ) and frost on the inside of the asbestos roof! ( fortunately
now replaced)
During the 70’s and 80’s Billy Teare, Lol Hewitt, Ian Collister,
Sandra Corlett and Pat Heesom formed the 1st Team nucleus but 1980’s
saw the emergence of some good young players such as Simon Clarke, Raymond
and Norman Brew, Anne Skillicorn amongst others who formed the backbone
of the team well into the 1990’s as they improved.
In 1994 the a team made it to the Final of the Green Final Trophy for
only the 2nd time in history but again missed out 4-3 to Castletown.
The Club continued to thrive but in 1998 when there was a membership predominantly
from outside Andreas, the Club decided to move to Sulby and change its
name to Sulby Badminton Club.
Sponsorship and support came in the first instance from Rosie and Eddie
Christian at the Sulby Glen Hotel closely followed by Arthur and Helen
Radcliffe from Kella Farms, Sulby.
Jeff and Isobel Gough of Gough Electrical have added sponsorship for our
third team and more recently, we were delighted, having fielded a fourth
team for the first time, to have received support from Raymond Caley at
Caley’s Stores.
It is fantastic to receive this truly local backing from all these sponsors
who have made a real community investment in what is the Island’s
only northern badminton club left in the Leagues - and a thriving one
at that.
Many of the current players have been loyally playing for the last 10
to 15 years and are included in the photographs on this site. Photos to
come.
The Club entered four teams last year in the mixed leagues. The Sulby
Glen Sulby team managed to finish mid table in Division 3.
The Kella Farms Sulby team also finished mid table. Gough Electrical finished,
funnily enough, mid table whilst Caley Stores Sulby took a real pounding
all season long and finished at the lower end of the group. The sponsor
has already voiced his concerns ! The club also reached the semi finals
in both the Mens and Ladies knockout competitions. Highlight of the season
was Sulby Glen Sulby reaching the Green Final for the first time since
1994.
This year, the Club is privileged to have the continued support of Edgar Quine OBE QPM CPM FIMgt as its President. Other elected officials include Rheuben Thomas as club capain, Simon Clarke as chairman, Ian Collister as Secretary and Bev, Sandra and Sarah as the Social Committee. Further team captains will be announced in three weeks time.
