The Isle of Man Branch of the Pony Club have just finished their annual camp which was held at the excellent facilities at Kennaa Equestrian Centre, St. Johns. Twenty one members along with their ponies moved into Kennaa on Monday evening and camped until Saturday lunchtime. Some ponies were stabled but the majority were kept at grass in small paddocks and the children slept in the newly completed offices on the yard at Kennaa. The children received tuition in both riding and horse care from top class instructors, two local instructors - Cheryl Bond and Natalie Pell, and also two visiting instructors from Holcombe Branch of the Pony Club, Rebecca Jenkinson and Daisy Shufflebottom. Although initially the weather forecast for the week was not good the rain held off until the evenings and a full timetable was maintained, culminating with a One Day Event where the children displayed their skills in dressage, show jumping and cross country many displaying new skills and confidence acquired during their week at camp. Parents and friends were invited to watch the showjumping and cross country section and also to attend the Camp prize Presentation where the prizes were presented by the Club's president Mrs Jackie McCubbin. Many of the older members of the Pony Club who started their eventing at such a competition are now off to compete at the Area 4 Eventing Qualifiers to be held at Skipton, Yorkshire on the 12th July. The Isle of Man Branch of the Pony Club are delighted that there will be twelve members competing at this competition, they are:-
Novice : Polly Rogerson, Lisa Young, Abby Corlett, Anna Watterson, Yasmin Ingham, Tabby Wright, Sarah Collister, Kirree Staley Intermediate: Chloe Cross, Laura Gill Open : Tara Adams Associates Novice : Jess Collister
Lisa Young, Chloe Cross, Polly Rogerson , Phoebe Cross and Tara Adams will also be competing in the Area 4/5 Tetrathlon Championship qualifier to be held in Cheshire on the 19th July.
We are very hopeful of some excellent results from these competitions and should have some members going forward to the Pony Club National Championships to be held in 15th 18th August at Draycott House, Derbyshire and also the Pony Club Novice Championships, 29th-30th August 2009 at Kelsall Hill Equestrian Centre, Cheshire.
Finally the Isle of Man Branch Prince Philip Cup games team made up of Tabbie Wright, Hannah Scarlett, Phoebe Cross, Ben Bamber and Katie Robinson won the Area competition most convincingly and are now off to the Zone qualifiers to be held on the 5th July at Newark Showground.
Good luck to all these Manx Pony Club members who will be competing at these prestigious events in the company of some of the top young riders in the UK.
Glorious sunshine greeted competitors as they arrived on Monday 25th May for the last hunter trial of the spring season to be held at Croit-ny-Cabbyl, Lonan (kind permission of Mr & Mrs Peter Bond). Once again there was a good entry with many competitors returning yet again to enjoy the thrill of cross country riding. In the first class the winners were Clara Whiteway and Ruby Agate, both with lovely young horses who are both showing a lot of potential for the future, Clara going on to win the second class as well. It was most encouraging to see so many competitors had moved up from Level 3 to Level 4 and Polly Rogerson proved that move was not a problem for Grianagh Mia as she won the Junior Intermediate class. This competition was held by the Pony Club on Thursday evening 14th May at Croit-ny-Cabbyl, Lonan (very kind permission of Mr & Mrs Peter Bond) Eight teams entered for this competition but unfortunately one had to withdraw on the day due to unforeseen circumstances but the seven teams taking part all put in good rounds with few problems. Fortunately the heavy rain held off until after the event finished although the surface was quite slippery so 10 sec was added to the optimum time to enable riders to get within time and all competitors were warned to ride with caution. The Pony Club held their Spring One Day Event on Sunday 3rd May at Croit-ny-Cabbyl, Lonan, (kind permission of Mr & Mrs David Dean and Mr & Mrs Peter Bond ). Unfortunately heavy rain prior to the event made the going in the dressage arenas and the showjumping ring extremely heavy and difficult and this did cause some problems. As this event was to be a trial for members hoping to represent the Club at the Area Eventing competitions at Skipton, Yorkshire in July these members were hoping for a good result and some were disappointed that they were unable to maintain their usual standard, however the going in the cross country section was only slightly soft and nearly everyone completed the course with a satisfactory result. It was most encouraging to see so many members with lovely new horses and ponies at the event all finishing with very promising results showing good potential for the future. Special mention to Clara Whiteway, Ruby Agate, Katy Robinson, Breeshey Evans and Imogen Cannell as this was the first ODE for the new combination of horse and rider and they must have all been very pleased with their results. Also well done to Tara Adams who completed the Open course in grand style a good result before departing to compete in several events in England. After a few heavy showers during the afternoon the clouds cleared away and the presentation of awards by Club President Mrs Jackie McCubbin took place in bright sunshine. The results were as follows:-

Once again the Pony Club is indebted to all the helpers who make these events possible. A very big thankyou to Peter Bond for his work creating and maintaining the cross country course, David and Carole Dean for allowing the use of their land, Arthur Taggart for marshalling the car parking, and Kevin Goldsmith and Angy Goodie for their ongoing help and support at events. The committee would also like to thank Mylchreests Motors and The Copy shop for their continued support and last but by no means least the huge number of people who give up their time so willingly - without their help we would not be able to run these very popular competitions.
Competitors are reminded that the next cross country competition will be the Team Competition on Thursday evening 14 th May, followed by the last Hunter Trial of the Spring season which will be held on Monday 25 th May both events will be held at Croit-ny-Cabbyl, Lonan. For further information regarding these events and future events of the Pony Club please visit www.iomponyclub.com
In perfect weather a huge number of competitors enjoyed a fun filled day at GGH on Saturday 18th April. It was wonderful to see so many new faces enjoying the action most in fancy dress which made a very colourful spectacle. Lots of novice riders were able to experience competition but in a very light hearted way. Even children without ponies were able to join in on their hobby horses these races being just as competitive as the mounted games! It really was most encouraging to see so many members enjoying their ponies as well as the social aspect afterwards of picnicking on the grass. There was hot competition in all races especially the lead rein as these little competitors are all now getting the hang of it and really want to win!
