Manx Road Club cyclists Jon Bellis, Peter Kennaugh jnr. and Scott Flynn, plus Mark Redhead, Ashley Whipp and Elliott Moore (TSP) travel to British Cycling HQ, Manchester, next week for additional testing and interviews with the Talent Team management, coaches and top riders who have come up through the ranks and are now at the top of their sport. Parents will also be interviewed enabling them to see for themselves the commitment required by the parents and their off spring in the years ahead should they get a placement. Two weeks later the cyclists return to Manchester to attend a training camp where they will get a taster of what is involved.
With two riders passing the stage two required index outright and the others close enough to be put forward for stage three for re testing, it proves the potential is there for the future of Manx cycling. Due to the limited number of spaces available (four on the tracking program in the North West making 20 places nationally ) passing the required targets does not mean automatic selection onto the program, however those who attend stage three will enjoy the experience gained from their attendance, in the knowledge that having reached this far, they have got 'the engine' required to go places in their cycling careers and perhaps become future Olympic champions!
Warren Flynn and Cayley Ennett are two local cyclists who have befitted from the Tracking Program

British Cycling officials spent most of Wednesday checking out possible future cycling facilities for local cyclists. As traffic conditions look set to worsen for the foreseeable future we need to recognise that what we have always taken for granted over the years is no longer viable from a safety point of view especially with children in mind, put simply bike racing needs to change into a facility based sport so that more training, coaching and leisure cycling takes place off the public roads. Information collected will then be placed in the hands of British Cycling's Facility Officer, Dave Cockram who will then present us with ideas on the best way forward

All local BC coaches are most welcome to attend the tests on Tuesday evening.

The first details of the Tour of Scotland are coming to light. The five-day race has been approved by the UCI and will run from May 26-30. It will be categorised as a 2.3 level stage race, which should ensure a decent field of pro riders, many of whom will no doubt be well into their preparations for the Tour de France, which follows little more than five weeks later.
Talking ot the Tour, it now seems unlikley that London will host the 2006 start, there has been a lot of competition from all the major European cities to host the start, plus the political fact that London and Paris are in competition to host the 2012 Olympics, don't lose hope though, London is in talks to host the event in 2007,

It was a case of rough and tumble for some at Sundays National Youth Circuit Championships on the impressive Preston Arena circuit. In the under 16 championship over half the field were involved in a high speed pile up in the last kilometre followed by yet another crash involving the dozen or so riders who escaped the first incident, this time in the final 200 metres. It was a great shame for the Manx riders as Jon Bellis, Warren Flynn and Steve Guymer (all MRC) along with Ashley and Arron Whipp from the TSP squad were all mixing well and putting in some good attacks with the cream of British cycling. Aaron did manage to miss most of the carnage to finish a good ninth.

If anyone
is able to assist in the following areas, their help would be much appreciated: Bray
Hill Road Closure This is the smallest job, but perhaps the most urgent. Help is needed to rope-off the first 10 roads (Bray Hill) on the TT course on Thursday 24th and Friday 25th. This is just a few minutes work, for about four people, at about 09.30 on each of the two days. There has been a problem in previous years where the race has virtually caught-up with the existing road closure team as they close all the roads around the course. Having a separate team to do Bray Hill, will enable them to get a head-start without closing the roads earlier than is necessary.
Cars
& Drivers The quote for the number of hire cars necessary to carry race officials during the Road Races came to £4000, which our limited budget simply cannot afford. If you would be prepared act as chauffeur in your own car, for a race official during one or more of any of the Road Races, please let us know. Petrol expenses will be paid to anyone offering this service. The perfect car for this job is a large saloon with a sun-roof, but no reasonable offer will be refused!

It was a case of 'Girl Power' on Monday evening for the second round of the Manx Mountain Bike Club's Summer Handicap Series. Making the most of what turned out to be a generous handicap, Jackie Kennaugh came home first after two laps of the fast course ahead of fellow long markers Melanie Draper, Wendy Fallon and Oliver Hanson who were second to fourth respectively. Russell Sansom was the first of the 'four lappers' to finish in fifth showing he could mix it with the fast boys after a long absence from the mountain bike scene. Road man, Allan Gage, who actually started cycling as a mountain biker some 13 years ago was sixth with fastest man on corrected time, Island Games bound Tristen Gell in seventh and Games team mate Chris Tierney finishing eighth. Alistar Beattie dropped his starting partners for ninth place with John Watterson getting the better of young Peter Kennaugh in 10th. more

The Manx youngsters spent Sunday at a sunny Birkenhead Park competing in the North West Regional Championships, Mark Cavendish got the procedings off to a good start with victory in the Junior race, however his result would not stand as Mark's first claim team is Dataphonics, who are not a North West Division registered team. Lee Wagstaffe finished in sixth. Joshua Cowie took victory in the under 10 race with Thomas Mazzone third and Jonathan Cregeen fifth. As expected Christopher Whorrall won the under 12 race, James Berry had a great race to finish second with Matheu Marshall third, Tim Kennaugh fourth and Sam Black fifth.

Fort Williams Cross-Country World Cup race produced a stunning spectacle and some outstanding racing. Josh Cowie, competing in his first national round this year finished seventh
in the under 10 race, closely followed by Thomas Mazzone in eighth and Jonathan
Cregeen in 10th.
In the under 12 event Caroline O'Neill and Tim Kennaugh found it tough going
on the undulating Eastway circuit, Caroline finishing in 16th with Tim two
places behind in 18th.
Peter Kennaugh was closely marked in the under 14 race after his success two
weeks earlier, however one rider did escape and ride alone to victory leaving
the bunch to sprint it out for the remaining placings, slightly disappointed
at finishing fifth Peter had the consolation of moving into first overall
with one round remaining.

The Manx Road
Club staged the Isle of Man Youth Cycling Championships recently. There was
a good entry of riders spread over the five age related categories with generous
prizes, flowers, medals and championship jerseys for the winners kindly donated
by event sponsors Curphey's of Castle St. Douglas.
The under eights started off the proceedings with Leon Mazzone coming home
first just ahead of Matthew Davies and Anna Christian.
In the under 10 event spectators were looking to see who would come out on
top in what was anticipated to be a close race, and they weren't far wrong
when Thomas Mazzone made it a family double by taking the chequered flag from
Josh Cowie and Jonathan Cregeen who were second and third respectfully.
Christopher Whorrall had a comfortable win in the under 12 race, Chris led
out early to finish a couple of bike lengths clear of second placed Caroline
O'Neill and Matheu Marshall in third.
The under 14 category was joined by the under 16 category due to absentees
from the latter category for various reasons, however, the pre race favourites
were there. Jon Bellis, Elliott Moore (both under 16) and under 14 rider Peter
Kennaugh forging an early break in the 25 lapper, with a second group formed
behind the leaders, keeping the race exciting as they actually closed on the
leading trio towards the end, the leaders, however, were aware of this and
increased their pace with Jon Bellis breaking away with a couple of laps remaining
to take the under 16 honours from Elliott Moore and Peter Kennaugh, the under
14 winner. The Bronze medal in the under 16 championship went to Cayley Ennett
with Matthew Looker taking silver and Mark Christian bronze in the under 14
race. Most unfortunate rider prize goes to Tom Black after a spill during
the under 14 event.
The champions looked resplendent on the podium in their 'champion' jersey
afterwards, with all those who took part enjoying themselves, the only questions
being asked when is the next one?
Thanks to all the organisers, sponsors, helpers and marshalls who helped make
the event such a success.

Andrew Nightingale (James Hay RT) took the lead after Stage 1 in the Category A's, closely followed by Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury) and in third spot Mark McNally (Liverpool Century). Stage 2 produced some very close racing, following a sprint to the line incident which saw Matthew Winston (James Hay RT) shooting off the track through the trees narrowly missing a spectator, then performed a miraculous recovery to finish sixth, the end result being Mark McNally (Liverpool Century), Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury), Warren Flynn (Manx RC).
A fight back in Stage 3 saw Warren Flynn take first, Matthew Winston second and Andrew Nightingale third, leaving an overall result after 3 stages - equal first Andrew Nightingale (James Hay RT) / Warren Flynn (Manx RC), with Steven Rudkin (Liverpool Mercury) in third place. Excellent racing all round for competitors and spectators alike, with group A riders performances to equal a pro-tour.
Group B was
closely contested with Liverpool Century riders Ian Pugh and Jonathan McEvoy
taking first and second place, and Ribble Valley's Daniel Rigby taking third
place in Stage 1. Stage 2 was once again led by Liverpool Century riders Ian
Pugh and Jonathan McEvoy, whilst Scott Flynn (Manx RC) took third place. The
outcome of Stage 3 saw Daniel Rigby take first place, Richard Pye (Red Rose
Olympic) second and Ian Pugh relegated to third. The overall result after
3 stages - Ian Pugh (Liverpool Century) first, with Daniel Rigby (Ribble Valley)
and Jonathan McEvoy (Liverpool Century) equal second. Marie Staurt (VC Cumbria)
produced some good quality racing in this Category being the first of the
female competitors. Red Rose Olympic riders Caroline Wood and Jenny Ramsey
finished second and third.

Tonight's results here
The organisers said "this years Tour of Ulster will take place over the weekend of May 3-5. The race covers some of the roads used during the past two years taking place in counties Armagh and Down. Stage end towns are Craigavon and Downpatrick.
A notable feature this year is that there is no time-trial, race director Eddie Farquhar instead going for a long opening stage of 95 miles which combines much of last years opening stage from Craigavon to Lisburn with the opening stage in 2001 to Downpatrick. With no TT there will be time bonuses for the first 10 riders on each stage to split up the riders in case of groups on equal time.
The long stage will fulfill a gap in the Irish calendar for race distances comparable with those in the 8-day FBD Milk Ras which starts later in the month. Nearly all the Irish riders in the 8-day have been using the Tour of Ulster as final preparation in recent years, giving the event probably the largest entry of first category riders of any Irish race apart from the Ras.
As usual there is a demand from cross-channel teams for places but the Tour of Ulster has always had the policy of home riders first. However entries are limited to 100 and any places not taken up will be allocated to teams such as the Isle of Man who provided last years winner Rob Holden.
The Manx team had a great tussle a year ago with the top Ulster squad Total Cycling/Lindsay Cars who are even stronger this season having added continental based Tommy Evans to their team.
Modern Tyre Service (Vredstein Tyres) will once again be sponsoring the King of the Mountains award and the race is receiving support from the Craigavon and Down District Councils. We also wish to thank the PSNI Motorcycle Team who have become such a feature of major cycle events, without whose superb work such events would be impossible to promote because of the big increase of traffic on the roads.
There are three stages. On Saturday 4th the race starts at Craigavon Water Sports Centre (12.00) with a 95m. stage to Downpatrick via Portadown, Armagh, (KOH), Markethill, Crankey Hill (KOH), Newry, Mayobridge, Hilltown, Castlewellan (KOH), Clough, Killough, (KOH), Ardglass, Strangford, Downpatrick (finish at Abbey Lodge Hotel.)
Sundays stage is 80 miles from Down Leisure Centre, Downpatrick (11.00) via Castlewellan (KOH), Hilltown (KOH), Newry, Crankey Hill (KOH) , Markethill, Deadmans Hill (KOH), Newtownhamilton, Fews Forest (KOH), Armagh, Portadown, Craigavon (finish at Craigavon Water Sports Centre)
Mondays 76 miles stage leaves Craigavon Water Sports Centre (12.00) with a 70m. stage via Portadown, Armagh, then 2 laps Primates Wall (KOH), Newtownhamilton, Fews Forest (KOH), Keady, Armagh, returning to Craigavon via Portadown (Old Tour of Armagh course).

The Snaefell Mountain Bike Club designed a brilliant course for the second Island Games selection race at Chibbanagh Plantation on Sunday. The Experts covered six laps of the technical course with the Sport class racing two laps fewer. The riders started up the main hill followed by several sections of single track with plenty for the technically minded including two 'bomb holes'. In the expert race Tristen Gell, Andrew Cook and Peter Kennaugh soon put space between themselves and the rest of the field. By quater distance Gell put the hammer down dropping Kennaugh with Cook a few seconds adrift, with one lap remaining it was Gell on his victory lap followed by Cookie who had caught and dropped Kennaugh with another close battle further back between Tony Varley and Chris Tierney, Kennaugh eventually caught Cook on the technical parts of the course to take second place at the finish with Varley fourth and Tierney Fifth. Jacqui Fletcher was the only woman competing riding well for sixth place

30th March: Prix de Vieux Bourg - 100km
"The race
was 20 laps of 5km flat, open circuit. It was a fast start but I decide to
sit back and settle in for the first few laps to let my chest warm-up. There
was a sprinter's prize through the race consisting of four sprints, one every
four laps. As we approach the first one with 16 laps to go, I decided to have
a go and lead out a long sprint for the line. One rider managed to just get
me at the line, so when it came round to the second one with 12 to go I got
Ben to lead me out. This time I won the sprint comfortably. This put me into
the lead of the competition. The bunch was still together as we approached
the third sprint with eight laps remaining , but half a lap before a group
jumped away. Ben and myself were together so we reacted by jumping across
to the group, I comfortably took the third sprint. The break of eight, contenting
Ben and myself, had a good gap of 20 seconds, so we set about working. The
group was working well, maintaining the gap as we passed through the fourth
and final sprint with four laps to go. I won this final sprint to consolidate
my victory as best sprinter. With two laps remaining, the bunch started to
closed in fast so I decided to was time to make my move and attacked. I got
a gap on my own, but as I came through the line with to commence my last lap
a hard chasing bunch pulled me back. I made my effort but the bunch was just
too strong. With only 5kms to go it was lining up to be a big bunch sprint.
This is an area where Ben is strong, so I committed myself to lead him out,
as the bunch massed with 300metres to go, I went to make my final kick, to
lead Ben into the sprint, unfortunately everyone else had the same idea. There
was a big squeeze at the front, behind me, Ben had no room to move. Touching
wheels, he hit the deck hard, followed by a number of riders behind, many
flying over the top of his head. I stayed upright but after my solo efforts
earlier I had nothing for the sprint and rounded in about 20th. I was pleased
that I had won the sprinters prize because after a recentillness I was only
feeling 60%. Ben was not seriously hurt, sustaining cuts and bruises. He'll
live to fight another day."

The famous East Riding Youth Tour takes place from Friday April 25 to Sunday April 27, course, rules and accommodation details can be found here
This was my first Elite 2 race of the year and it was a 1.12.1 ranked race. 1.12.1 is the highest rating for a French National Amateur race! The race included some of the top Elite team's from around France. I was only told the day before that I was racing, so it came as a bit of a shock. The start was like most elite event, flat out from the gun. I intended just to sit in and get warmed up and into the rhythm of the race although it was extremely fast start, we covered 50kms in the first hour (32 miles) and the second hour was only slightly slower. After about 60kms, a break of about 18 riders got a gap. A number of riders tried to jump across, so I decided I'd have a go. I attacked flat out and got a gap on my own. I went flat out and got within 10 metres off the back of the group but as we hit a small rise, I exploded and went back to the peloton. I sat back for a while as I needed to recover a little. The break had about 1 minute, but split after about 100kms to leave 7 left up front. I was just sitting in the bunch waited for the finish. With about 40kms to go my team leader asked us to start working, so I got straight to the front and started riding hard until none of my team-mates were able to work with me, I carried on for a bit longer until my leader told me to stop. Then with 20kms to go (2 laps) on the climb through the finish, we forced a split and 20 of us made the counter-attack. We rode hard but the break still had 1min. Then on the last lap with about 6kms to go, after a number of attacks from a few riders including myself, we split the counter-attack. 7 of us got away, then in the final kilometres I tried attacking a number of times as the uphill sprint did not suit me. We had the break within sight in the last km but we were not quite going to catch them. I tried one final time to get away, but everyone jumped on my wheel, so I was first into the last corner and led out the sprint for 8th place. The sprint was uphill, and I had gone to early so my legs gave up. My group managed to sprint past me but I still finished 15th place. A fantastic result for me so early in the season, and I was also 2nd Under 23 rider. I was so strong all day and I feel that, although this was not a win, this was my best performance in France so far, as it was a top-rated elite event with a number of top French riders and ex-professional in the field. In the end the average speed for the 100 miles was over 28mph! A bit fast.
23rd March:
Prix de Buxerolles - 158km
As my efforts the day before in the Circuit du Bocage, I was not really ready
for another race of that speed. I was feeling tired as my training is not
yet geared to racing two days in a row. I started the event but never really
found my rhythm. I was moving up and down the bunch quite well but never really
in the race. After about 50km, my leader called me to the front as we were
going to chase down the break but then he decided against it. For that instant
I found my rhythm but once I lost my focus again I found myself at the back.
This is where I stayed until it split on a long flat section and I decided
to call it a day. I stopped after about 60 or 70 kms. I had not expected anything
from this race as I had ridden hard the day before and got the result I wanted.
My team-mates did well though eventually finished 4th and 5th.
My next race is on Sunday 30th March. It is an Elite 3 race over 110kms near Bordeaux. The race is GP Pessac.

Bordeaux Inter-regional
40km Winter Madison Championships with Mark Kelly and Ben Hallam
We had two
warm-up races to start with, a 30 lap scratch race and a 60 lap points race,
reports Mark Kelly, I didn't feel that good in the warm-up races,
suffering with heavy and sore legs plus I was not that motivated for them
so I had a few attacks to warm-up but not much more.
When it came to the Madison, I felt fine, my head was right and I felt very
strong, the problem was that we were a little nervous early on in the race
and did not hold our position very well but when I attacked I had no problem
getting the gaps and pulling away.
Unfortunately
a team gained a lap before Ben and myself had settled in. At about half distance
I put in a big attack and we got away. The team that already had a lap came
with us, we gained half a lap, then other team stopped working with us. Ben
and I carried on working alone but we were getting a little tired. We were
close to gaining a lap when I got the other team to start working again. Unfortunately
while I was resting up the banking I slipped off and crashed. It all came
back together. I kept attacking for the rest of the race but we could not
hold the gaps as everyone was always chasing us down.
Anyway, I was feeling very strong and recovering very well, I was putting
in very strong attacks repeatedly and getting gaps. We didn't get a result
but it was a very good interval session. I think we were about 4th or 5th.
Back to the road next week.

Mark Kelly GP Castres -
102km
This was my
first race of the season with my new club, US Montauban. It was E3/National
race over a hilly loop of 102km. Due to starting my training late after a
long 2002 season, I was not really ready for racing, but after being asked
to ride by my manager, I did a short period of intense training to get into
some kind of shape. I was asked to ride it as this was the first in a series
of races that make up the Trophy Midi-Pyrenees Espoir, an important Under
23 series in the South of France. After a good warm-up, I got stuck in straight
away, going with the first attack. I was feeling surprisingly good and had
strong legs. The strength is there but the fitness is not, as every time I
attacked I died quite quickly. Although this is no worry as it is early season.
I went with a number of attacks, then after 50kms a break got away without
any Montauban riders in it. I could see that my team were trying to get a
chase organised, so I moved up to the front bringing my Polish team-mate.
We rode hard on the front and after about five kms we pulled the break back.
I attacked straight away and got away with three other riders, but two kms
up the road we hit a short sharp climbs and my legs went bang. We were caught
and went back into the bunch to have a rest and recover until near the end.
With about 20kms to go at the top of a hill I put it in a big gear and road
off the front of the bunch. There was a break away so I stuck my head-down
and rode. I got about halfway across on my own but then the bunch caught me
and the break then opened the gap again. After this I knew there was no chance
of catching them. So the 16 man break would stay away so with a km to go I
decided to have a do or die effort. I got to the front and hit the last corner
on the front with 200m to go. Unfortunately, I didn't have the power out of
the corner and a few riders got passed me. I finished about 22nd. Overall
this was a good debut for the season as my coach and myself were not expecting
much after the high intensity and volume of the training I have been doing
lately.
Island Games Selection Race
Twenty seven
riders lined up for the Island Games selection race organised on Sunday
by the Manx Mountain Bike Club. The Experts, and Island Games hopefuls,
covered seven laps of a tough 2.7 mile circuit with the Sport class opting
to do three laps on the same course. Giant sponsored rider Elliott Baxter
and Andrew Cook set the early tempo and were together for the first lap with
Tristen Gell 13 seconds adrift in third place. However, midway through the
second lap Baxter started to pull away leaving the rest of the field to scrap
for the remaining placings.
By mid distance the leaders had settled into a pecking order, the only exception
being Lee Wagstaffe dropping to sixth having been passed by Tony Varley. At
the finish it was Baxter ahead of Cook by six and a half minutes with Gell
claiming third spot another 75 seconds later. Fourth place was taken by the
ever improving Chris Tierney. Varley was next in fifth with Wagstaffe sixth,
holding off a fast finishing Geoff Ennett and top lady Jacqui Fletcher who
were seventh and eighth respectively. Neil Helks rode gamely to secure ninth
spot.
In the Sport race Peter Kennaugh jnr set the early pace only to be passed
by a fast finishing Alister Beattie towards the end of the race. Mike Duffey
rode a steady race for third. Tony Conway, Rob Christian and Jon Bellis came
home in fourth, fifth and sixth respectively. Newcomers Wendy Fallon and Michael
Cromwell impressed by finishing the race in what is early days in their mountain
biking careers.

National Rankings
Whilst scanning through the British Cycling 2002 rankings I noticed several local cyclists making the cut, Andrew Roche (elite) ended up 102nd, Mark Kelly (first) finished 26th with Graeme Hatcher coming in 272nd. Peter Gage was 347th in the second category rankings whilst Richard Fletcher (465th), Allan Gage (571st) and Gordon Kennaugh (641st) in the competitive third cats. Your web host, Peter Kennaugh, managed to finish equal first in the high scoring fourth cats!! Considering the Manxies probably only count for about 10% of the available points, I believe we didn't do to bad. Apologies for all those I missed and if I get a minute I will post the Juvenile rankings. View the full rankings here

News From Mark Kelly
Mark Kelly has
now settled down at his new base in France and can't wait to get stuck into
some serious racing "The 2003 season is just about to get into full swing
and I am back in France with a new team, US Moutauban 82. It is a French Amateur
Division 1 team, based in Montauban, about 50kms north of Toulouse. It is a
high quality team with a number of top French elite riders including Olivier
Asmaker and Laurent Estadieu, who were both professionals last year. They will
bring a lot of strength and experience to the team. Within the team there is
a Under 23 section, which I am part of. This is the international section of
the team with three British riders, two French and a Polish rider. I am here
with my track madison partner, Ben Hallam. We will be joined in the summer by
the other British rider, Adam Illingworth, who is joining us from the British
Junior World Championship Squad of last year. The Polish rider is Jaroslaw Barranowski,
brother of a top Polish professional.
We have a strong Under 23 Squad and will be targeting the Midi-Pyrenees Espoir
Challenge, a important Under 23 series in the South of France. The first of
these is the GP Castres on the 9th March. We also hope to ride a number of World
Cup Under 23 event, although this will depend on how well the team comes together.
We will be mixing in with the Elite Squad for a number of top event in the French
Division one Cup Series and a series of small Professional races. I am hoping
to ride the Circuit de Mines, a small professional race at the end of April,
which will hopefully give me exposure to a number of professional teams. This
will help in being noticed for the future, and my aim of turning Professional.
We are currently training on the Cote Basque in the southwest of France. Although,
very cold, training is going very well, including the 105 miles I rode last
Sunday on my own. My training started late this winter due to my long season
last year, and this works in with the plan to come into form later in the year
for my target races which include the Under 23 version of Paris-Roubaix. A savage
race known as the Hell of North, 110 miles over large section of cobbled roads.
A tough race to say the least, one for the strong. I'm also targeting the European
and World Under 23 Road Races and the European Under 23 Track Championships.
We are here in the south for 10 days, with a number of the team racing already.
With five top 10 placing including a 2nd by Sebastian on Sunday. I have preferred
to stick with my training, riding everyday working at various power output to
develop my strength in different aspects. Some days are long and steady while
others are short intense hill climbing sessions. I have been riding using my
Powertap, a power measuring wheel recording the wattage I produce. My coach
analysis's the information and assesses my fitness to devise new training programmes
for me. With the Powertap, I'm able to work closely with my coach even though
he lives in Sweden. This means all workout information and training in communicated
via e-mail, an aspect helped greatly by the sponsorship of manx.net
So all is progressing well and I hope to be able to report on many good results
over the course of the 2003 season."
