Island Horse & Pony Aid, Manx Registered Charity Number 469 was established in 1991 and was originally called Island Pony Rescue.

We work closely with the MSPCA who provide the support in sending an animal welfare officer to check out any reports made to our helpline or directly to the MSPCA. If there is a problem, the welfare officer will always try and resolve this before taking animals into care.Island Horse & Pony Aid will provide support to owners who are perhaps experiencing a problem and need some general assistance. Sometimes this may lead to an owner mutually agreeing to hand over the equine to the society.

In cases where prosecution is likely the MSPCA will be involved with taking the case forward and Island Horse & Pony Aid will care for the equine during this time and will endeavour to foster at a later date.

How many equines have been involved?

Over the past twelve years, Island Horse & Pony Aid have been involved with taking on a total of 21 equines, 3 horses, 16 ponies and 2 donkeys. Sadly, 9 are no longer with us.

These equines have come into the society for a number of reasons including:

  • Owners are unable to cope any more (perhaps due to ill health or injury)
  • Death of owner
  • Abandoned equines
  • Neglected equines (where it is not serious enough for prosecution)
  • As a result of criminal prosecution for ill-treatment or neglect
  • To avoid being shipped off the Island to market (possibly ending up for meat)

However, there are many occasions when ponies do not come into the care of the society, but we assist in introducing third parties who are either looking to foster an animal or are looking for a replacement animal.

What can I do to help?

There are several ways that the general public can help, such as:

  • Support our stalls at various events (Royal Manx, Southern Agricultural, Laxey Fayre, Tynwald Day etc)
  • Become a member - membership costs starts at £2.50 per year
  • Assist with fund-raising events
  • Offer to help look after equines when they come in (either by offering short / long term homes or providing man-power)
  • Collect used stamps which we "cash-in" for money
  • By making a donation
  • Sponsorship of a specific item - for example, a new rug for a particular equine, sponsorship of schooling for unbroken animals (this usually assists in providing a long-term home)
  • Donating second hand unwanted tack for use on animals in care or to be sold at our annual tack sale
  • Donating other regular consumables such as shavings, straw, etc
