GGH WINTER DRESSAGE
22/11/10

With the colder weather now, entries for the mid week Dressage at GGH Equitation Centre on Monday 22 nd were slightly down, but the quality of many of the tests ridden continues to improve, especially those of the more novice riders and young horses.

Angela Kennedy and Ann Quigley and their writers braved the cold wind with the help of hot water bottles! The last event before these informal days start again in the Spring will be on Thursday 9 th December.

A novice rider who successfully rode at a higher level was Robert Thomson, who won Test 10 on his eye catching black horse, Beckhouse Black Bailey – he only started competing earlier this Autumn. Jane Upsdell took her young horse to a higher level, while Natalie Pell on ‘Q' Blue Cascade rode two very polished tests after giving the horse an autumn break.

In the evening session the group of regular young riders demonstrated how valuable it is to keep competing, as they all achieved very satisfactory marks. Young Tinesha Kinley set herself the challenge of going up a level to ride a competently produced Test 10.

GGH AUTUMN DRESSAGE
10/11/10

With the varying weather at the moment, it is difficult to remember which season it is, but another of the Informal Autumn Dressage days was held at GGH Equitation Centre on Wednesday 10 th November on a cold but sunny day. Many of the Competitors welcomed the informal atmosphere, and the organisers enjoyed watching the progress of the young horses.

The battle between Jane Upsdell and Tricia Kissack on their youngsters continues, with Ballakissack Finula having a more unsettled day, Captain Bountiful won both Preliminary Classes, but a third young horse, Galatea, ridden by Rebecca Sowerby is fast becoming a challenge to them both, as she is rapidly becoming more settled and developing some balanced paces.

The evening group of little riders almost have their own league, with only eight marks separating the top four riders. These young riders are rapidly improving the quality of their movements: learning by watching each other over the weeks.

GGH WINTER SHOWJUMPING
07/11/10

There was a happy, jolly atmosphere at GGH Equitation Centre on Sunday 7th November with a huge entry in the two Tadpole Classes: it was so encouraging to see nearly all of them off the lead rein and riding so well that the future of showjumping on the Island looks very healthy.

David Mylchreest, whose Company Mylchreests Misubishi sponsor this Winter Series jointly with Malcolm Jones Ltd, arrived with his daughter to jump, but the older riders had to delay their start while the little riders completed their classes. It looks like Abby Jackson's run of success is likely to be challenged by Tinesha Kinley on Monster Munch, who won the Tadpoles ‘A' Class.

The arena had a really Halloween feel about it, with many of the jumps decorated in that theme by Tracey and Anna Harding and Breeshey Bond – thank you. The next festive occasion will be the January round which comes within the Christmas season, and there will be some small prizes for those who come decorated for the festive season.

Tina Quayle in the Novice Rider Class held off a strong challenge from Nathan Mealin to take first place: Nathan took second and third place.

There were a number of new faces in the adult classes in the afternoon, with good entries making for some very competitive rounds. Many combinations took home rosettes, and it was good to see the only man, Kevin Drewry, win the Cubhunter Class with a very fast, well ridden round.

GGH AUTUMN DRESSAGE
26/10/10

Tuesday 26th October was a good day for the younger competitors at the GGH Indoor Dressage as it was half term, and they were all able to perform their tests in the daytime: the joint winners in the ‘Intro' test were Molly Fraser and Hannah Geoghegan with a high score, and the other young riders very close behind.

It was a day for shared prizes; in the next test Christine Robinson and Judy O'Neill shared third place with improved percentages on their last competition, while once again Jane Upsdell presented a strong challenge to Tricia Kissack, but had to settle for second place.

At the higher level it was Zandra Preston's day, taking two second placings on Mighty Atom. She is a rider who has gradually progressed up the levels and is now reaping the results.

The next winter event will be held on Wednesday 10 th November when, once again, there will be an evening session to cater for those who are school and those working in the day time.

GGH WINTER SHOWJUMPING
17/10/10

There has been a busy few days at GGH Equitation Centre with Dressage on the 14th October and a Dressage clinic on Monday 18 th and Tuesday 19 th , and sandwiched in between on Sunday 17th was the first of the Indoor Showjumping Series. This runs each month, with the opportunity for competitors to gain points for placings on the Championship Day in April when the two sponsors, Malcolm Jones Ltd and Mylchreests Mitsubishi will award the prize money for points gained during the season.

At all levels in the first competition of the season there were new faces, with some very competitive rounds. There was an especially large entry in the two Tadpole Classes, and it was lovely to see the new young riders starting their careers: the main prize winners came from among last year's Competitors, Percy Hampton, Abby Jackson and Jessica Loader, but it could be that as the season progresses they will be seriously challenged.

Another of last year's juniors, Lauren Bellamy on her two ponies Picture Perfect and Oh Mi had a good morning, while Peter McGinn on Emerald Lady Bay and younger sister Lucy on Garth Little Siouxsie swept the board by winning the higher level junior classes.

A delighted Emma Senogles made a good start to the season on her horse, Ben Hur, who has been off work for nearly two years, in the two novice adult classes. Juliet Tranter beat off most of the new faces on Nitron X in the Intermediate Classes, with two beautifully ridden rounds, while Kirree Staley on her eyecatching horse, Pretty Boy, took the open class.

The next qualifying round in the series will be held on the 7th November; then the excitement begins to build up as points are accumulated.

GGH AUTUMN DRESSAGE
14/10/10

It was annual awards day at GGH Equitation Centre on Thursday 14th October. These are awarded to Junior and Adult Riders who have shown either consistent achievement, or improvement especially to a higher level at GGH Dressage Competitions throughout the last twelve months. It is lovely to be able to award those who put in the hard work and at the moment there are some lovely young horses being produced on the Island .

Entries were good again and the judges Vicky Henthorn and Ann Quigley were kept busy, along with their writers. It was especially encouraging to have a large entry of young riders – very healthy for the future of the sport. Four of the youngest riders, Jordanne Kennaugh, Molly Fraser, Katy Robinson and Tinesha Kinley were only a few marks apart, so it looks like being a competitive season.

Annual Awards

Shimmin Trophy for achievement, Jo Cubbon; reserve Tricia Kissack;

Albion Trophy for improvement, Aggie Crapper; reserve Gill Prestwich.

Viking Hotel Trophy for achievement, Breeshey Bond.

Mann Crane Hire Trophy for improvement, Hebe Williamson.

GGH LATE SUMMER DRESSAGE
29/09/10

After a wet start to the day, Wednesday 29 th turned into a beautiful autumn day for the last of the Informal Summer Series of Dressage at GGH Equitation Centre. There was a large entry which kept the two judges, Cheryl Bond and Sue Kirkpatrick, and their writers really busy.

There was the usual mix of young horses, and less experienced riders, with some challenging themselves to yet higher levels. Leanne McKee rode a GGH four year old home produced youngster Allanagh Salamander, to second place in her first test, as did young Hannah Geoghegan on her lovely four year old pony – a good start for both combinations.

Clare Williams had a good day in Test 12, taking first and second placings: second placed Romeo's Passion is her new young horse. The lovely young horse Nourejev, recently acquired by Ashleigh Owen, performed two lovely preliminary tests in the evening session to take two first placings with a massive lead.

Once again it was encouraging for this discipline that so many competitors are producing their horses correctly at the lower level, which is so important.

GGH will be starting their Winter Dressage Sessions on Thursday 14 th October: also on this day the special annual trophies for the last year will be presented.

GGH LATE SUMMER DRESSAGE
08/09/10

The beautiful warm early Autumn day experienced at GGH Equitation Centre on Wednesday 8 th September resulted in most of the riders asking if they could ride without their coats for their dressage tests. A sunny day for the organiser, judges – Suzanne Corlett, Rhona Bond and Pat Purvis – and the writers is always a bonus.

It was a busy day from late morning to evening with the usual mix of first time competitors, and more experienced combinations taking advantage of the higher level tests being run in the long outdoor arena till the end of September. It was also very encouraging to see not only some young horses well produced, but many of last seasons younger horses moving up a level.

Jane Upsdell on her young horse, Captain Bountiful, provided a strong challenge to Tricia Kissack on Ballakissak Finula in the two preliminary classes: both had really good percentages and a first and second place each.

Jo Cubbon has taken her young horse, Fidget, up to novice level and achieved the highest percentage of the day, while Gill Prestwich challenged herself on Dalesman to achieve a first and second placing with well ridden tests.

GGH HARVEST DRESSAGE

Results 2010

The Annual Harvest Dressage was moved to a later date this year, but there was a large entry at GGH Equitation Centre on Saturday 21 st August. For the second year running it was sponsored by Giuliotti Fine Jewels, and Loretta Thompson had crafted an exquisite stock pin which was presented to the rider over 40 years gaining the highest percentage of the day in a test.

There were a large number of riders eligible for this lovely stock pin award and it was won by Gill Shacklock on Belle, who rode two lovely flowing tests to win the Senior Preliminary Class. Aggie Crapper on her talented young home produced horse, ENRICO, won the Novice Open, and it looked for a while like she might have won the beautiful pin.

Hebe Williamson on her pony Lacklyle Maverick, recently returned from a successful trip to the UK ; won the Junior Class with two good marks, and it was very encouraging to see many more riders contesting the Elementary Classes. Bianca Kinrade on Amadeus VIII won the Affiliated Class, and she also rode a well presented Medium Test. The larger unaffiliated class was won by Carly Letch on Rihanna, also recently returned from a successful trip away.

Visiting Judge Annette Scott found the main training fault in some well presented tests was the need for more preparation and thought of the transitions to make for a more fluent and well balanced performance. Along with Barbara Harrison-Bland and Jude Klaus, Annette, their writers and several stewards and time keepers worked their way through 10 hours of competition to complete a smoothly run day, with excellent team work.

With the GGH Showjumping Championship on Sunday 29 th , 10am start, winding up the midweek summer series, it is only a couple of months before the Indoor Showjumping Series starts on 17 th October, and there is a continuing programme of informal Dressage events planned for mid-week through the Autumn and Winter months.

GGH LATE SUMMER DRESSAGE
11/08/10

GGH Equitation Centre had a good lesson on 11th /12th August on how to take the highs with the lows. Wednesday 11th saw a large entry in one of their informal dressage events, while the outdoor showjumping on Thursday 12th had to be cancelled due to lack of entries: in past years the reverse would have been true.

The relaxed dressage competitions are proving very popular for the more apprehensive competitor, and the perfect setting for young horses, which were out in force, and it was good to see so many correctly ridden tests. Angela Kennedy had a long stint judging with the support of three writers.

Once again Aggie Crapper on another young horse had the highest percentage of the day and led two classes on Champagne Charlie, while Ashleigh Owen on her new young horse, Frankie, won a large class in the long outside arena. Not many rode in the higher level tests, taking an opportunity to practice for the Harvest Dressage Competition on Saturday 21 st August.

With school holidays and many children away. the Junior entries were low, but the standard was good and Jessica Loader won two classes on Wortley Orlando.

GGH MIDSUMMER COMBINED TRAINING AND DRESSAGE
12/06/10

The success of an event can only be as good as the many many stewards make it: they keep the day running smoothly, sorting out competitor's queries and worries. It is often a boring and thankless task, or in the case of the results team, stressful; but without them all chaos would ensue.

This was the first of the two big summer events at GGH Equitation Centre, sponsored by Milan Veterinary Practice and Horse & Rider. There were classes catering for every level from Affiliated Classes, giving Dressage riders the opportunity to qualify for the Regional Finals on the mainland, to lead-rein competitors, and all those in between.

One of the judges, Jane Holderness-Roddam, was making her fourth visit, and was very impressed by the general improvements, which was reflected by some very good percentages. This was especially so in the results of Emma Quine and Diamond's Delight III and Aggie Crapper and Enrico; these are both home produced young horses, brought on sensibly throughout recent months. The other judge, Denise Aylmer-Aylmore, was kept very busy too, and was making her first visit to the Island .

Two riders qualified for the summer regions: Rebecca Venn on Valkyrree and Dawn Stanton on Motovador. Some of the horses gave their riders some moments of anxiety as, although it was a fine day, it was quite windy. The Novice 37 was a strong class with some very good percentages.

George Osborn ran the Show Jumping Section of the Combined Training and had built a very forgiving course, as the going was firm, but with a nice covering of grass. The Bunnyhop Class was very close, with the two leaders, Jessica Loader and Tinesha Kinely on identical dressage marks, but the result was a win for first time competitor Tinesha, with a clear round.

Another close finish was the Adult Novice: with only one dressage mark between the leaders, Joanne Copley and Claire Williams, their order was reversed in the jump off with Jo clocking up some time faults.

The date of the next big event at GGH has been moved to August 21st . The Harvest Dressage also has Affiliated Classes, and the results of the majority of the classes ridden by the competitors having the totals of two classes added together, and once again there will be visiting judges.

GGH Spring Dressage
24/05/10

The final event of the spring series of dressage competitions held from March to May was held on Monday 24th May. It has been used by new competitors to the sport, an opportunity to bring out young horses in a slightly quieter atmosphere than at the bigger events, and for others the opportunity to compete midweek.

There were several tests in the long outdoor arena, which not many riders get the opportunity to practice in: a good warm up for some of the bigger competitions. It is also a good way for local judges to keep their eye in, and gain experience with not so many people around. Angela Kennedy and Vicky Fleming were kept busy on Monday.

It has been good for the organisers at GGH Equitation Centre to watch the steady improvement, especially some of the young riders and young horses. It is hoped to run a couple of events during the summer in between the many other equestrian activities planned on the Island , so watch the website!

GGH Spring Dressage
21/04/10

At GGH Equitation Centre on Wednesday 21st April there was the very encouraging sight of many riders competing to a high standard. Catering more for those beginning a competitive career, or young horses, there are also tests to challenge the more ambitious riders.

It is really a great boost to riders, owners and organisers to see these informal competitions well supported and observe the steady improvement in individual performances. Thanks are once again in order for the judges, Vicky Henthorn and Michelle Hargreaves, for giving up their time – with more people competing it is important to encourage as many as possible to try their hand at judging.

Aggie Crapper on Enrico and Tricia Kissack on Ballakissack Finuala showed once again that their previous wins were no fluke, with beautiful flowing tests on their young horses. Many of the combinations, senior and junior are showing a much better understanding of what is required in a dressage test. As the longer evenings stretch out the challenge of tests in the long outside arena have started. During the summer it is planned to hold some tests up to medium for riders who do not normally try the higher level, to ‘have a go' in an informal atmosphere.

GGH Spring Dressage
07/04/10

It has been a really busy Easter period in the horse community on the Island , packed full of training and competitions. The wet Easter Weekend caused the cancellation of outside events, but the Indoor School at GGH Equitation Centre has held two dressage and one showjumping event over the last ten days. The dressage event on Wednesday 7 th April was a quiet event, on a sunny day.

An ideal setting for young horses and less experienced riders, and a trainee judge: all the back bone of the growing sport of dressage. Once again Aggie Crapper on her young horse Enrico, had some lovely moments in her tests, although her horse was slightly more on its toes than last time.

Newcomer, Chrissy Dobson on Querido Espana rode a very well prepared test on her lovely horse, full of character, while Natalie Pell on ‘Q' Blue Cascade showed a steady improvement on previous events.

GGH Show Jumping Championships
04/04/10

A happy day with lots to celebrate for many of the competitors at GGH Equitation Centre on Sunday 4 th April for the Indoor Showjumping Championships. It is sponsored jointly by Malcolm Jones Ltd and Mylchreests Mitsubishi, with the majority of the competitors accumulating points at qualifying rounds since October in order to get a share of the prize money on Sunday.

David Mylchreest came up early in the morning to watch the youngest riders: the ‘Tadpoles', and present them all with their prizes. Percy Hampton on his pony Donkey Boy was the star of this section, winning both classes and points and taking away the Most Improved Lead Rein Trophy. Abby Jackson , off the lead rein this season, put up a great challenge to take two second places on her pony Poppy and the Most Improved Tadpole Rider Trophy.

It was very rewarding to see some of last year's Tadpoles successfully progressing, with Ella Perry doing really well on Grianagh Benjamin Bunny. Lauren Bellamy did well bringing on her youngster, Oh Mi, and in the higher classes there were some very polished rounds completed. The Advanced Intermediate ended up with brother and sister, Peter and Lucy McGinn battling it out with two rounds very close in time, and Lucy winning by a second!

The lovely weather continued into the afternoon for the Seniors and everyone was sustained throughout the day with Paddy's refreshments, with the addition of some lovely home-made cakes! Unfortunately Bryonny Scott wasn't there to pick up her Most Improve Novice Rider Trophy and points awards for a very successful season.

Although not so successful on Sunday, Christine Robinson on Grianagh Sheaynus has had a really good winter, and ended up with two trophies as a result: the Laureston Trophy and the Veteran Trophy. Newcomer to the GGH event, Lori Moreton on Jalaga Jack, took two firsts and second prize in the medium height classes, with some well ridden rounds, but not having completed any qualifying rounds during the season, the trophies went to lower placed riders.

With the jumps on championship day a hole higher than throughout the season, it is always quite a challenging day. The first of the mid-week outdoor showjumping events starts at the end of April, by which time it is hoped that the weather will be a little warmer, as these start at 5pm. Thanks are due to all the judges and writers who give up their time to enable all these days to run so smoothly.

GGH Spring Dressage
29/03/10

Monday 29th March saw a vicious return of some appallingly wet weather, and the most suitable gear at GGH Equitation Centre on that day would have been a snorkel and goggles! However, with an indoor school the event went ahead, although there were several withdrawals earlier in the day.

These enabled those who did appear to warm up in the withdrawals time slots, and some very impressive tests with good percentages were ridden. It was also very encouraging to see several new young riders in their first dressage competition riding with a lot of assurance. Martha-Paige Megson, Tinesha Kinley and Nicole Andrews have all made a successful start to their dressage careers!

In the adult section Julie Joyce was delighted with her ‘Hor's concours' ride on Skywalk and Aggie Crapper on her young horse Enrico rode two lovely tests in spite of warming up in the pouring rain!

GGH Spring Dressage
10/03/10

Because of the hard winter weather this year there was quite a long break in the informal dressage competitions at GGH Equitation Centre, which are held midweek. The entry at the first one on 10th March was small, owing to the rather short notice of the date, and the next day will be Monday 29th March.

Julie Joyce on Briarland Apricot won the only Novice Class, while Isobel Brennock on Conrhenny Idea rode a nice test to win the Prelim 12. These competitions are especially put on for training practice and an opportunity to bring on young horses. Much improved from before Christmas, Breeshey Bond rode two balanced tests on the young pony she has produced herself, Allanagh Eriska.

GGH Showjumping
07/03/10

GGH Equitation Centre's luck held on Sunday 7th March, with yet another fine day for the final qualifying round of their Indoor Showjumping Series. The sunshine brought out a lot of late entries and a large number of spectators. It was the final chance for competitors to gain points towards the joint sponsors awards. Malcolm Jones Ltd and Mylchreests Mitsubishi should be really pleased with the successful season: the Championship Day is on Easter Sunday, when all the trophies are awarded – all are welcome.

There have been some very young riders in the two tadpole classes this season, but they have all improved and rode some very competitive rounds, and Abby Jackson on Poppy was especially pleased to win the Tadpoles B Class, as she has worked hard all season to master her very keen pony.

Anna Harding, whose own pony has been out of action most of the season, had a good morning on Monster Munch with two seconds in classes two and three, while Lucy McGinn who has been sidelined a large part of the season, came back to win two of the more advanced classes on Garth Little Siouxsie in fine style!

In the Adult Novice Classes in the afternoon, two of the youngest riders were particularly successful: Jordanne Kennaugh on Derrymore Diamond and Bryanny Scott on Grianagh Saretta with two firsts, a second and a third place between them.

Competition was fierce in the Cubhunter and Open Classes, with some very good rounds being ridden, but Carla Moss on Greenwood Dionysus won both; the open with the fastest senior round of the day.

In April there is the final day of the winter series, and on Thursday 29th April the first of the midweek summer series, again with generous sponsorship and a Championship at the end of August. Paddy will be there each evening, and it is hoped that once again some of those less experienced at riding outside will come along: it is all very informal.

GGH Showjumping
07/02/10

With a slightly foggy start to the day on Sunday 7th February, the fifth qualifying round of the GGH Indoor Showjumping Series got underway with the same enthusiasm amongst the younger riders as usual. Even the ‘Tadpoles' are fiercely competitive, eager to gain points for the awards presented on the Championship Day on Easter Sunday – made possible by the generous sponsorship of Malcolm Jones Ltd and Mylchreests Mitsubishi.

In both the juniors and adults, some of the homebred Grianagh Stud Ponies, who used to earn their keep in the riding school, made their presence felt today. Grianagh Benjamin Bunny, ridden by Ella Perry and Grianagh Vida now ridden by Abigale Turner-Drewry being placed second and third in the novice rider class.

In the adult section, one of the youngest riders, Bryonny Scott had a great afternoon, winning both Novice Classes on Grianagh Saretta, while Christine Robinson won the Intermediate on Grianagh Sheaynus. A few years ago the stud prefix was changed to ‘Allanagh' and the first stock are now coming forward, though most have gone to the mainland. However Breeshey Bond on her own Allanagh Eriska is beginning to catch the eye with her forward, happy style.

GGH Showjumping
03/01/10

The blast of wintery weather which hit the Island over the New Year was kind to GGH Equitation centre on Sunday 3 rd January, with a cold a frosty day but no wind and bright sunshine.  The forth round of the Indoor Showjumping series, sponsored by Malcolm Jones Ltd and M Mychreests started before nine in the morning in an almost party atmosphere.

With the ground too hard to use the outdoor arenas, the warming up took place indoors round the showjumping course, in batches between the classes.  In December George Osborn, who runs the showjumping for GGH, said he would sponsor fancy dress prizes in the three sections.  The Tadpoles was won by a pretty old fashioned outfit by Blae Richardson on her pony Taffy; the cold made her cheeks nearly as red as her outfit.

It looked like Abigail Turner-Drewry and her family has spent hours preparing Grianagh Vida and certainly deserved the junior prize.  Just as colourful was Christine Robinson on Grianagh Sheaynus, who won the adult prize, and several runners-up prizes won bags of carrots, to be shared with their horses.

In the Tadpoles, Percy Hampton continued his successful season on Donkey Boy with two wins, as did Charlotte Craine winning the Novice Rider and Intermediate on Little Lucy Locket.  It was lovely to see a much larger entry in the more advanced classes, with Peter McGinn winning the Advanced Intermediate on Emerald Lady Bay , and Sozannah Cox on her lovely new pony Beechpark Molly.

The competitive spirit continued into the afternoon with the adults, it was Fenella carter who provided the most thrilling moment of the day when she was nearly jumped off by Rahorn in the open at high speed, but with Fenella clinging round his neck with no stirrups, he carried on as if nothing was wrong and jumped the next fence, by then he had chucked his jockey back in the saddle, and to applause from the spectators finished the course.  However Juliet Tranter took the first two places on her horses with two balanced rounds.

In spite of the appalling weather forecast for Sunday 6 th December, the GGH Indoor Showjumping went ahead and it turned out to be a bright sunny day. As often happens just before Christmas, entries move slightly down, but competition was as fierce as ever for this third round in the Winter Series, sponsored by Mylchreests Mitsubishi and Malcolm Jones Ltd. In the New Year it is likely that competition will be even fiercer as competitors vie with each other to gain the most points towards the Championship Day points in April.

This competitive streak starts with the smallest riders in the Tadpole Classes having very close times in the jump off, with Percy Hampton on Donkey Boy gaining a first and second place this time. Boys continued to shine in the next two classes, with Alexander Henthorn on Tyler winning the two Novice Classes, and Archie Veale and Harry Corrin coming second and third in the Novice Pony Class. In the coming years it looks likely that these three will present quite a challenge to the girls as they all rode extremely well.

In the afternoon in the Adult Classes Christine Robinson showed that her patience in working hard with Grianagh Sheaynus paid off with a first and third placing. In the next classes Fenella Carter had a first and second on both her horses; Krug and Rahorn. But once again in the next advanced classes Juliet Tranter presented a strong challenge on her two horses, Nitron X and Orlando. Ruby Agate on her lovely horse Peppermill Street also presented a strong challenge with two third placings in the Forage Stakes and Clubhunter Classes.

The fourth round in this series will be held on 3 rd January. As this falls within the Christmas Season, the decorations will still be up and it is expected that several competitors will also have their ponies/horses decorated festively. Go-Equi-Fence are planning to present a voucher to juniors and adults with the most eye-catching décor!

GGH Autumn Dressage
23/11/09

There was another good turnout for the last of the informal Monday dressage events which have been held in the winter months at GGH Equitation Centre. Designed especially to encourage the more novice riders and young horses, and also to train new dressage judges and writers, these days have become so popular that they now start mid morning, and with a short afternoon break, go on into the evening, thus enabling riders to come after school or work.

Anne Quigley and Tricia Kissack judged on Monday 23rd . Tricia had an especially busy day as she rode her lovely young horse, Ballakissack Finuala, to continue her successful season in this series, with excellent marks. She was only beaten in one class by a beautiful flowing test ridden by Natalie Pell riding Margie Clucas' home bred horse ‘Q' Blue Cascade.

The only other rider to come near these two in percentage marks was a junior in the evening: Hebe Williamson on her lovely new pony, Maverick. Another evening competitor on her home produced young pony, Allanagh Eriska, showed a steady improvement from earlier in the season. Her rider, Breeshey Bond, has broken her in and schooled herself, and she did her credit on Monday.

GGH Autumn Dressage
09/11/09

What a blessing that Sunday's lovely weather carried over to Monday, when there was another full day at GGH with Dressage starting mid morning, and with an afternoon break, on into the evening. The two judges Clare Drewry and Sally Muirhead, were kept warm and alert with a stream of hot water bottles!

It was encouraging to see once again some of the young horses who have taken part in this series continuing to improve. Karen Higgins, on her young horse rode two lovely tests and was rewarded with two first places. Chris McFee, took her young horse Rye into first place in the Novice 26, with Jo Cubbon only one mark behind on her youngster, Fidget.

Some of the younger riders in the evening showed they are establishing a good grasp of dressage. Clare Williams, who also had a successful day on Sunday in the showjumping, rode a beautiful test on her attractive pony Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

GGH Showjumping
08/11/09

What beautiful weather for a busy two days at GGH Equitation Centre. Another long day of showjumping on Sunday 8th November brought out some more new faces, which is always encouraging for the sponsors: Malcolm Jones and Mylchreests Mitsubishi.

George Osborn had built a really challenging course, which required accurate riding on the turns, and some of the younger riders struggled with the jump-off course, which was fairly twisty, but on the other hand as the jumps got bigger for both the juniors and seniors, there were increasingly balanced, but faster rounds, completed.

In the Tadpole section today the two Loader sisters, Jessica and Daisy, sowed the seeds of some very competitive riding within the family – fun for the future! Another family, Lucy and Peter McGinn had a really good day in the juniors, with three firsts and a second between them.

In the adults, one of the less experienced novices, Christine Robinson on Grianagh Sheaynus had a first and third place with consistent rounds. In the more advanced classes three riders in particular showed how to ride well balanced, fast rides, and divided the spoils between them: Juliet Tranter, Ashleigh Owen and Fenella Carter.

GGH Autumn Dressage
26/10/09

The competitive spirit of the first Showjumping in the Winter series seems to have spilt over into the Monday Dressage Events at GGH Equitation Centre. They are advertised as informal days, but the competitors take it very seriously and were all beautifully turned out. Several of the classes finished with the prize winners barely a mark apart, with one of the Judges, Jane Barham, remarking how the general standard of tests ridden is improving for yet another year.

The other Judge, Rhona Bond, also had a busy day, finishing with some well ridden tests. Jane Seed continues her learning skills by judging a large Intro Class and Breeshey Bond tried her hand at writing – very efficiently. With the increasing popularity of this discipline it is so important to have enough Judges and writers.

Tricia Kissack followed up on her last competition result on her lovely young horse by winning the Intro ‘A' adult section and was equal first with Karen Higgins on her young horse. The highest percentage of the day was achieved by a junior rider, Clare Williams on her attractive pony Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. In the most advanced class, Amy Senogles on Bimbo showed her previous wins, where there were smaller entries, were no fluke, by beating some experienced combinations to win the Novice 21.

GGH Showjumping
18/10/09

Sunday 18th October was a busy day at GGH Equitation Centre for the first of the Indoor Showjumping Winter Series, with several new competitors at the Centre at all levels, where some very competitive rounds were ridden against the clock. The whole series of six qualifying events is once again sponsored by Malcolm Jones Ltd and MYLCHREESTS MITSUBISHI (Mylchreests are being appointed the official Mitsubishi Dealers for the Island ). Points gained by placings in these qualifying rounds will go towards the sponsors prize money on the Championship Day in April.

If the very competitive atmosphere in nearly all the classes in this first round, with very close times, is anything to go by, it promises to be a very exciting season. This began in the very first class with two young riders Percy Hampton and Abby Jackson competing hard for first place, and Ella Perry on Grianagh Benjamin Bunny taking first place with a fast time gained by some tight turns in the Novice Pony Class.

Junior Judge, Emma Kennaugh, continued recording faster times as the morning progressed; the first three places in the Intermediate Class had just over a second between them, with Jodie Ahern taking first place with a skilfully ridden round.

The afternoon session for the adults, judged by Jo Brackett , became very exciting in both the Intermediate and Forage Stakes, with very fast times; the top three in each class determined to win, but in the end only Georgina Moore on Fireblaze and Jo Brown on Blind Ambition were successful.

GGH Autumn Dressage
12/10/09

Once again there was a good entry for the second of the Informal Dressage Competitions at GGH Equitation centre on Monday 12th October.  What a difference a fine day makes, not just for the competitors and their horses along with the friends and families who come to support them, but also for the organiser, judges and their writers. The two judges, Suzanne Corlett and Jane Upsdell kept the day and evening flowing smoothly, and found time to put many helpful remarks on the score sheets.

Tricia Kissack brought her lovely young horse along for its first outing at GGH, and it behaved beautifully. Called Ballakissack Finuala it produced one of the highest scores of the day. Another young horse which performed an excellent test was Rye ridden by Chris McFee. Another less experienced rider in this discipline, Fenella Carter, on her young horse achieved a good score in the highest class.

The next of these informal competitions is on Monday 26 th October, which will be half term for many of the younger competitors.

GGH Autumn Dressage
28/09/09

Wow! What a start to GGH Equitation Centre's Autumn Dressage. The first of the season's weekday competitions had a massive entry, with nearly ten hours of continuous classes. The purpose of these informal competitions held in the autumn and spring is to encourage those with less experience and young horses. The juniors and more experienced combinations have their own sections, and this has proved a successful formula for encouraging new riders to ‘have a go'.

They are also an opportunity for anyone local who may be interested in doing some judging, and Juliet Tranter judged her first class on Monday 28th September. Joining her were Sue Kirkpatrick and Sally Muirhead, who have both expressed an interest in becoming British Dressage Judges.

This first day of the season was also the opportunity to present four trophies awarded for performance at GGH over the last 12 months.

The Shimmin Trophy for the most consistent adult was won by Jo Copley, with a special reserve rosette to Jo Cubbon as they were very close. Jo Cubbon proved how useful the last years experience has been for her young horse, Fidget, by winning two classes with excellent marks.

Emma Senogles won the unusual Albion Saddlery Trophy for the most improved rider: she had competed on three separate horses throughout the year, gaining valuable experience. Again there was a reserve, which went to Karen Higgins on her young horse, Conrhenny Trophy, in his first season.

In the junior classes the Viking Hotel Trophy for consistent achievement went to Callum Staley: it is always good to see the boys achieving in dressage. The Mann Crane Hire Trophy for the most improved rider/pony combination went to Breeshey Bond on her lovely young pony, ALLANAGH ERISKA. It is a great achievement, as Eriska, bred at GGH, was only backed early last year by Breeshey, who has been entirely responsible for producing her.

The general standard throughout the day was excellent: very encouraging for the sport! The next day is Monday 12 th October, with the first of the Indoor Showjumping Series the following Sunday, 18th October.

GGH OUTDOOR SHOWJUMPING CHAMPIONSHIP
30/08/09

The summer season at GGH climaxed on the bank holiday sunday. There was great competition from riders to gain double prize money for those who had qualified. Although it rained for the day it had not dampened the ability of the competitors to perform some speedy jump off's, nor the going which has been good all summer.

Special thanks once again to all the sponsors for the complete summer sponsorship, which has really made a difference to the competitive edge with the Showjumping. Not to forget Paddy's County Cuisine for fueling everyone's appetite!

The start of the indoor 2009 2010 winter season begins on the 18th October and is kindly sponsored by Mylchreests Land Rover and Malcolm Jones Limited. The continuation of the new course designs GGH winter season is a must from novice to experienced rider and horse.

GGH OUTDOOR SHOWJUMPING
23/07/09

The mid summer June and July show jumping at GGH has generated some fantastic competition. Riders and there steeds have produced some ground breaking rounds. Throughout the summer each course has become more and more technical in preparation for the championship show on the 30th August.

The competition lately has seen a greater support for those in the Junior classes, especially the Lexus Isle of Man Sandcastle Stakes, which has been won in the last two competitions by Sammy Cattle on Cushag Spindoctor.

A new arrival to the Summer show jumping competition has set a good standard for the senior side. Anna Higgins on Silver Sapphire produced some clean cut clears in the Sadler Agricultural Supplies Harvest Stakes and also the Country Warehouse Summer Solstice Stakes with a good 10 second lead in the Jump off's claiming both first place prizes.

Congratulations to all the prize winners from these last two events and those previous. Competitors will now be preparing for the pre-championship show on 11th August, where there's the final opportunity to get that double clear to qualify for the Championship day on the 30th August.

On the day competitors who have qualified over the summer months will have the opportunity to double their money. For those not qualified for the event can still compete at the show jumping championship to join in the atmosphere.

GGH HARVEST DRESSAGE
12/07/09

The two visiting judges, Jane Goldsmith and Roy Tipping were both kept very busy on Sunday 12 th July at GGH Equitation Centre at their annual Harvest Dressage event. The main classes at this competition have a slightly different format to the usual competition in that each rider completes two tests at the same level: these scores are then added together to find the winner, who is also presented with a trophy.

There was a new sponsor this year: Giulotti Fine Jewels. The owner of this is Loretta Thompson, who has been a very keen Competitor in this discipline for a number of years. She added an original touch of anticipation to the day by presenting a beautiful stock pin designed and made by herself for the Competitor, (40 years or above), who achieved the highest percentage of the day. The winner of this was Clare Drewry on Two Step Rhythm: she was the only combination of the day to achieve over 70%, so the award was well deserved.

Colleen Miller on Gypsy Moth beat Clare in the Novice Open Class by riding two very consistent tests in the high 60's. The Elementary Class was won by two accurate tests ridden by Juliet Tranter on Ollie IV. Though lacking competition in the Affiliated Classes, Ashleigh Owen won the Novice on her attractive pony Keltic Connections.

GGH OUTDOOR SHOWJUMPING
19/05/09

On Tuesday evening GGH held there second summer showjumping show, an increase in competitors and excellent ground conditions heated the competition. The continued sponsorship over the summer is well received by the riders, with money prizes for 1st place in every class.

Lianne McKee on Rocky Star took on a large field in the Caledonian Toyota Sandcastle Stakes and flew round clear with the fastest time to win. The Junior version of this height; The Lexus Isle of Man Sandcastle Stakes, saw Sammy Cattle on Cushag Spindoctor beating Charlotte Craine on Lucy Locket by just half a second.

Claire Williams was a pleasure to watch and rode her pony Charlie and the Chocolate Factory very well, due to a technical error she missed out on winning her first class but managed to correct things for the Faulkners Harvest Stakes to take a clean first. The senior class The Sadlers Agricultural Supplies Harvest Stakes was won by Kirree Staley on Pretty Boy who produced a well ridden double clear to win the class.

The W.D.S. large Open at 1m,15 was an exciting end to a great evening with both horses and riders really going for it making use of the sharp turns in the Jump off, Fenella Carter on Rahorn with a time of 41.73 and Tara Adams on Fernhill Footsie winning with a close time of 41.53.
