EVNPA Newsletter 2

The committee have decided to replace the advertised Clinic and Fun Show on the 22 nd April with a new season-long competition and a more formal show for the first event. We also have a change of venue: Ballacaley, Sulby, by kind permission of Mr Phil Plant. The field will be signposted from Sulby Glen crossroads.

EVNPA Progressive Series

This new series of classes is designed to help improve turn-out, handling and ridden ring craft. If you are new to showing, want to upgrade from fun shows to open classes or improve your chances in open classes, this is for you.

There will be 3 categories:

  1. M and M Ponies
  2. Non M and M Ponies
  3. Horses

* Riders may be any age suitable to their horse/pony, to fit the usual range of open show classes.

* Judging will be over 3 sections: tack and turn-out, ridden show and ringcraft, and how to show in-hand. In each section points will be awarded towards a total.

* The same judge will do the whole series to give continuity.

* Score sheets will be retained by the club. A ‘tips' sheet, similar to a dressage sheet, will be prepared for each participant for collection after the classes are completed.

  • The series will be run over at least 3 club events aiming for improvement in each of the sections. At the end of the series prizes will be awarded to those showing most improvement.

The aim of the competition is to help you with:

Tack and Turn-out: What to wear – yourself and your pony/horse.

What classes you will be suited to and how to be sure your turn- out is correct.

Ridden Show and Ringcraft:
The best way to ride a show and make sure the judge is drawn to you for the correct reasons, to show yourself and your pony to the best of your ability.
How to talk with the judge, knowing the information he/she may ask you about your pony/horse.
Ring manners.
The importance of listening to the judge and his/her steward and of following instructions.

Showing In-Hand: The correct way to lead and to stand your pony/horse for the judge, to walk away and trot back.

The classes will be judged in this order. You will be expected to strip for the In-hand section.

April 2012

Following our AGM and Pony/Horse of the Year presentation your expanded Committee (numbers not post-Xmas waistlines) have decided to adapt our timetable of events for the 2012 season to hopefully encourage more of you to take part.

Our first event, 22nd April, will now be an Instructional on showing in the morning followed by show classes after lunch. The instructional will cover such things as correct wear for you and your mount for different classes, eg: when is bling acceptable?, how to show the judge your ponies best points in ridden and inhand classes, length of show and where to finish to give your salute, etc. In the afternoon there will be a range of classes where you can try out tips and advice from the morning session. You can come to either or both of the sessions – with reduced entry for the whole day.

June 24th will be our Summer Show, fun and show classes, with UK judges already booked, who have experience at competing at international level. A sponsor has offered significant cash prizes for the Champion and Reserve Champion at this event!

In July we have been invited to join the Isle of Man Dressage Group at their Lough Mollogh venue near Ramsey, with special awards for Mountain and Moorlands. There may be other opportunities to join the Dressage Group at their instructionals and other events during the season.

September 16 th is to be our Event Pony/Horse competition, which many of you seem to enjoy, and for our final event of the season we are planning a Charity Pleasure Ride in early October to be run on similar lines to the Trek4Hereos held at Conrhenny in 2010 with a ride out followed by some everyday countryside hazards. This is a chance for you to have a social ride with friends in a different location.

Don't forget, the Pony/Horse of the Year competition runs throughout the season, this year some classes will be worth double points, and this year we have two extra trophies to be competed for – details later.

Finally, we have a new location for the season, the TT campsite field, Ballamoar Farm, Ballaugh, by kind permission of the Huxham family, with access just up the Glen Road so no more long treks to the far North!

During the shows on-field Treasure Hunts and Quizzes are planned to occupy non-riders and riders between classes.

We look forward to seeing you at as many of these events as possible – and if you can offer any assistance with stewarding and/or general help on show days you will be made most welcome!
